Did you know that seagull is not only a “harbor cleaner and a forecaster of maritime safety”, it has also helped mankind solve a major drinking water problem, which can be described as a “drinking water revolution”!That is Reverse Osmosis Basic Theory Framework.

In 1950, American scientist DR.S.Sourirajan discovered that there is a thin film in the seagull’s throat. This thin film is very delicate. Seawater is sucked into the body by the seagull and pressurized, and then the water molecules penetrate through the membrane to be converted into fresh water through pressure. The seawater containing impurities and highly concentrated salt is spat out of the mouth. This is the basic theoretical framework of reverse osmosis (Reverse Osmosis, referred to as RO) in the future, and was applied to desalination equipment by the University of Florida in 1953. The mucosal tissue in the seagull’s throat is the biological prototype of the reverse osmosis membrane.

The application of reverse osmosis is the pressure difference, and reverse osmosis technology was quickly introduced to the aerospace field. Reverse osmosis technology is used to purify used sewage, etc., to become reclaimed water that meets drinking standards, so that spacecraft does not need to carry a large amount of drinking water to lift off. Reverse osmosis technology has made a great contribution to the Apollo moon landing program.
After the successful application of reverse osmosis technology in the aerospace field, it was transferred to the military industry. Since 70 years, it has been equipped with American submarines, aircraft carriers and combat ships, which are used to directly make drinking water from seawater. Therefore, RO membranes are vividly called high-tech outside the body-“Artificial kidney”.
